MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay has received reassuring news from Monmouthshire County Council regarding proposals to cut a number of bus routes in the Monmouth constituency.
There was particular concern that the number 60 Newport to Usk service was rumoured likely to be withdrawn.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said:
”I am happy to say this is not the case. This service is not operated by Stagecoach but is currently run by Town and Country Bus under a subsidised tender to Monmouthshire County Council and there are no plans to remove it. The service 60 that Stagecoach announced was being cut involved two journeys – one morning and a return in the afternoon from Newport to Coleg Gwent Usk Campus as part of the college service and I am told that the Council are currently looking at alternative provision for this service with Coleg Gwent.
“The Council have also told me that they are currently working with Newport City Council and local bus operators to work out solutions on alternative services to the Services X74/74 Newport to Chepstow.
“I hope this latest update will go some way towards clarifying the current situation. We should be doing all we can to encourage people to use public transport and I know that many elderly people and students rely very heavily on these bus services, as do as those using the bus to travel to and from work.”
