AM joins call for business rate reform

LOCAL Assembly Member Nick Ramsay is supporting a campaign to help small businesses across Wales.

To date 70 businesses and Chambers of Commerce across Wales have signed a letter to the Government’s First Minister and Cabinet setting out their concerns regarding the burden of business rates on small businesses and calling on the Government to extend the Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) scheme and abolish business rates for small businesses with a rateable value of up to £12,000 and tapered relief for those up to £15,000.

Giving his full backing to the campaign, Mr Ramsay said:

“Business rates are a huge burden on small businesses, which are the lifeblood of the Welsh economy. Extending the SBRR scheme would be an enormous help to small businesses, with 73 per cent of business premises being taken out of rates altogether and a further five per cent benefiting from tapered relief.

“I have long campaigned for business rate reform and I hope the Government will listen to this heartfelt plea from local businesses and heed their calls for urgent business rate reform.”
