MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay met representatives of the National Farmers Union in Usk on Monday to discuss a range of issues, including tackling Bovine Tuberculosis and the electronic identification of cattle.
Monmouthshire farmers are concerned about the Welsh Government’s proposals to change the way that compensation for farmers affected by Bovine TB is calculated – consultation on this issue has just ended with the possibility of moving from a market calculation for TB affected cattle to tabular calculation, which could potentially see farmers with affected herds losing a significant amount of compensation which is needed to reinvest in a quality herd.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Ramsay said:
“I was pleased to meet with local farmers and understand their concerns about Bovine TB. Bovine TB needs to be tackled and there is an urgent need for a fair compensation regime to be put in place.
“I am asking for a meeting with the Welsh Government’s Natural Resources Minister, Alun Davies AM, to press for appropriate compensation for farmers.”
