AM supports Scams and Swindles campaign

MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay is giving his full backing to Age Cymru’s “Scams and Swindles” campaign, which seeks to provide more protection for vulnerable older people against scammers and rogue traders.

Age Cymru are proposing to widen the scope and scale of No Cold Call Zones and to make them legally enforceable, as well as calling for telecommunications’ and postal companies used by scammers to provide more protection against scams.

Research by Age Cymru has shown that in a recent 12 month period, there were nearly 1,000 doorstep swindles and more than 1,650 postal, telephone or internet scams reported in Wales – but that figure could be as high as 50,000 as evidence suggest that only five per cent of scams are reported.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said:

”I am more than happy to support this campaign as I know that rogue traders and scammers pose a serious threat, particularly to vulnerable, older people.

“On a number of occasions, I have issued press releases to the local papers to alert the public to scams I have been made aware of and I will continue to do this in an effort to protect those who are more likely to become victims of this kind of activities.”
