MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay is asking the Government Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, Edwina Hart AM, if it would be possible to grant Abergavenny Town Council a concession regarding the use of street lighting columns on the A40 through the town for banners and flowers.
Mr Ramsay was asked by the Town Council to intercede after the Council received a letter from the Government’s Highways Department stating that the banners and baskets should be removed from columns as this policy was not permissible.
Commenting on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said:
“Understandably, councillors are very unhappy about this policy as they feel that the hanging baskets and banners on the lighting columns are a good way to brighten up the town and it is a practice that has been in place for many years without a problem.
“I hope the Minister will look at this issue and grant the Town Council the concession it has requested.”
