Local Assembly Member, Nick Ramsay, attended a meeting held last night at Shirenewton Church Hall arranged by local parents who are concerned that Shirenewton Primary School will be heavily over-subscribed for the 2015 intake.
Local Education Authority officials were present at the meeting to discuss the fact that siblings attending a school have precedence over those children living closest to the school.
Speaking today Nick said:
“I agree with the concerned parents that it is bizarre that children may be required to travel miles to school when there is a good school they wish to attend on their doorstep.
“It also runs counter to modern arguments on sustainability, where walking and other forms of active travel should be encouraged rather than bus and car.
“Something needs to be done to sort this out. I will be working with parents and the local authority in the new year to try and find an acceptable solution.”
