MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay was sorry to learn that Penperlleni Post Office would be closing temporarily on June 17th following the resignation of the operator.
The Post Office are currently investigating options available, which would enable a Post Office service to be reinstated but stress that any future service would need to be sustainable both for the person operating the service and for Post Office Limited. Future provision would reflect customer numbers and usage and there is a possibility that an alternative type of service may be established. This could be an outreach service where a Postmaster from a nearby branch offers the facility with hours of opening set to reflect the likely numbers of customers or a new style “Post Office Local” branch, which runs alongside an established local shop.
Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said:
“So many rural communities have lost their Post Offices in recent years and it would be sad if this were to happen at Penperlleni. Post Offices are at the hub of community life and offer a vital service, particularly to people who have difficulty travelling further afield.
“Let’s hope that the Post Office can come up with a proposal that is acceptable to the local community”
