AM urges Government to support Mabey Bridge bid

LOCAL Assembly Member Nick Ramsay is calling on the Welsh Government to give as much support as possible to the companies involved in a last minute bid  to take over the Mabey Bridge turbine tower-building plant, which is under imminent threat of closure.

The Lydney based company, one of the world’s biggest and longest established steel fabrication experts, opened a £38m turbine tower building plant in 2011,  employing 280 people but  announced last December that it intended to sell its renewable energy division and concentrate solely on bridge construction. The company’s decision was attributed partly to the uncertainty of market conditions for the UK offshore wind industry.

Speaking today, Mr Ramsay said:

“I  understand that Simec, the new owner of the  Uskmouth Power Station, is interested in taking over the plant and would be prepared to take on 150 workers if a deal can be struck.

“I will be urging the Welsh Government to fully support all the negotiations taking place to save the renewables’ element of this long established family  business and secure the jobs of the very talented people who work there.
