MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay has pledged to press the Welsh Government for changes to their single farm payment flat rate policy after meeting local farmers at the Monmouthshire Livestock Market at Bryngwyn on Wednesday.
Speaking after the visit, Mr Ramsay said:
“It is clear that farmers are extremely concerned about the current policy, which is undermining lowland farming. Farmers feel that the Welsh Government are not listening to their concerns and that a lot more could be done to help the farming industry, which is so crucial to the rural economy.
“The move to a single farm flat rate payment system with no transitional measures will leave many young farmers out of pocket at a time when they need money to invest in farms and their workforce,
“With farmgate milk prices at an all time low, dairy farmers in particular have had a dreadful year.
“The Welsh Government has ignored these concerns for far too long, rural communities need our support and that is why I am determined that farming will be a core issue at next year’s Assembly Elections.”
