AM presses for urgent update on Abergavenny traffic lights

MONMOUTH Assembly Member Nick Ramsay has written to the Welsh Government’s Minister for Transport, Ken Skates AM, asking for an urgent update on when the scaffolding and temporary lights are likely to be removed in Abergavenny Town Centre.

Mr Ramsay has written to Mr Skates’ predecessor on many occasions regarding long traffic delays through the town centre due to the temporary traffics lights which have been in place for many months following the fire in Monk Street.

Speaking today, he said:

“I was assured that the temporary lights would be removed by now and certainly well before the Eisteddfod, which begins at the end of July.

“Unfortunately, although additional scaffolding has recently been removed from The George Hotel, one of the buildings damaged by the fire doesn’t look as if it has been repaired and there is still no sign of the scaffolding being removed.

“Until this happens, the temporary lights will presumably have to remain in place, with the continued traffic chaos at peak times in the town. Motorists are becoming increasingly frustrated by the long delays.

“I am pressing the Minister for an update as a matter of urgency so that the town will look at its best for tourists and visitors to the Eisteddfod. I hope it won’t be too long before this situation is resolved.”

AM’s concern over traffic delays in Abergavenny town centre

MONMOUTH  Assembly Member Nick Ramsay has been informed by the Welsh Government’s Minister for Transport, Edwina Hart AM, that there is little likelihood that the temporary traffic lights in the centre of Abergavenny will be removed in the near future due to delays with the refurbishment of the fire damaged buildings in Monk Street.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mr Ramsay said:

“This is disappointing news. A number of constituents have contacted me recently to complain about delays to traffic passing through the centre of town, resulting in tailbacks up the Monmouth Road as far as the junction with Station Road.

“What’s particularly worrying is that this situation is likely to get worse during the busy summer months.

“If traffic problems become a major issue over the coming weeks I will be taking the matter up with the Minister as a matter of urgency.”
